Hives

I saw a photograph of  a beehive clinging to the ceiling of a mosque in ruins. The bees' site of occupation was intriguing; an empty shrine now housed a living threat. To explore this idea of a hostile takeover I went back into an older series of paintings ('Doubles', 2009) and methodically painted connected clusters of individual circles to act as a brood comb that threatened to encase the existing painting. This transfiguration is applied to the canvas without prejudice, pollinating into a single swarm.
